UChicago’s Arts, Science & Culture Initiative; departments of Art History, Music, Creative Writing, Cinema and Media Studies, and Visual Arts; and UChicago Arts will convene artists and scholars throughout the fall for Arts and the Nuclear Age, a lecture series commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Chicago Pile-1 experiment and the concurrent 50th anniversary of artist Henry Moore's Nuclear Energy sculpture. The culminating lectures on the anniversary, December 2, will feature talks by scholar and former Henry Moore Foundation staff member Anne Wagner, architect Ludovico Centis, and principals Luke Ogrydziak and Zoë Prillinger from California-based firm Ogrydziak Prillinger Architects (OPA).
Through a partnership with the Chicago Architecture Biennial, UChicago Arts will also host a satellite installation by Ludovico Centis on campus that recreates the 20-foot high Chicago Pile-1 out of new materials. The installation positions the main campus in dialogue with the more loosely-representative Lantern Pile installation inside the Eckhardt Research Center, as well as with Nuclear Thresholds, OPA's temporary architectural installation on the CP-1 site.
