Crowd Out explores what it means to be part of a crowd—the embodied exploration of the one and the many--by combining the voices of 1000 Chicagoans as they move through Chicago’s Millennium Park. Crowd Out is a public performance and civic occasion, open to all, featuring Chicagoans from all 50 wards.
Crowd Out is a community choir reflecting the complexities, challenges, and hopes of the 21st century. Set in the architectural heart of Chicago and just steps from the Chicago Cultural Center and the core Chicago Architectural Biennial exhibition, crowd brings the people of Chicago to come together in a performance unlike any other.
This marks the U.S. premiere of Crowd Out, composed by David Lang. Lang is one of America's most esteemed and performed composers. Many of his works resemble each other only in the fierce intelligence and clarity of vision that inform their structures. Much of his work seeks to expand the definition of virtuosity in music — even the deceptively simple pieces can be fiendishly difficult to play and require incredible concentration by musicians and audiences alike. Lang has received a Pulitzer prize for music composition, was nominated for both the Golden Globe and Oscar for Best Original Song, and is a recipient of the Rome Prize.
Crowd Out is co-produced by the Chicago Humanities Festival and Illinois Humanities.
