Using photos and commentary, writer Robert Sharoff and photographer William Zbaren will provide an overview of their new monograph, which studies John Vinci’s extraordinary half-century career. The lecture will be followed by a Q&A with the architect, who turned 80 earlier this year.
“This book makes clear that Chicago is John’s city as much as it ever was Louis Sullivan’s, Frank Lloyd Wright’s or Mies van der Rohe’s,” says James Cuno, president of the J. Paul Getty Trust.
Acclaimed for his activism for historic preservation as well as for restoring such early Chicago landmarks as Sullivan’s Stock Exchange Trading Room and the Carson Pirie Scott Building, Wright’s Home Studio and Robie House and Burnham & Root’s Monadnock Building, Vinci also designed residential and institutional commissions such as the Arts Club of Chicago and the Davis House -- fusions of his early education at Illinois Institute of Technology and the First Chicago School of Architecture.
