This compelling program will invite an exploration into the intersection of art and architecture at the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial. The boundaries between the fields of art and architecture continue to be blurred due to architects and artists continued adoption of collaborative practices. Paul Andersen will be in conversation with their collaborators from the Masonic Advisory Council, as well as the transformation of the Chicago Cultural Center's Landmark Gallery. Working with masons, Paul Andersen and Paul Preissner developed five enclosed rooms of heavy walls with curious forms and traditional masonry. The unconventional use of tile and enfilade layout, which has been a defining form of museums and urban thoroughfares for centuries, sharpens the gallery's unique convergence of fine arts and public works.

Participant Bios:
Paul Andersen and Paul Preissner
Paul Andersen and Paul Preissner are Chicago-based architects who first worked together on a pair of barns in Denver’s primary urban park for the Biennial of the Americas. Ordinarily, they run separate offices that invest in formal and informal work, with associations with pop and alternative cultures. Their collaborative work combines their different interests and results in thoughtful, and sometimes polemical, speculative and built projects. Their collaborative title is Paul and Paul, and their work has been published in the Chicago Tribune, Domus, Architectural Record, PLOT, and numerous other national and international publications. The office was recognized with a Chicago AIA Honor Award for its pavilion for the Biennial of the Americas (2013).
Thomas Kelley
Architect Thomas Kelley enhances and repositions our understanding of material culture. His work seeks to amuse as he engages with ideas of play and magic to confound the standard reading of ordinary objects. Thomas is an assistant professor in the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago and a partner at Norman Kelley, a collaborative architecture and design office with Carrie Norman, based in New York and Chicago.
Paul Rauch III
Paul Rauch III is President of Rauch Clay Sales Corp. The company was founded by his grandmother, Virginia Doan Rauch in 1948. Rauch Clay Sales has spent the last 70 years supplying Ceramic Structural Glazed Tile and Ceramic Glazed brick to Chicagoland, Wisconsin, and Northwest Indiana.
Devon Dillenbeck
Devon Dillenbeck started his professional career developing and deploying distribution software before pivoting to Rauch Clay Sales Corp. He now uses his problem solving skills at to find and connect customers with the materials they need.
