6018North celebrates the opening of three new architectural installations: The Chapuisat Brothers’ In Wood We Trust, a tree-top funhouse entered by crawling through a tunnel; A Room Has Its Own Voice, a sound installation by Troy Briggs which will encompass the entire house; and a mushroom insulation wall Mykitas Epoch – Habitat by CV Peterson courtesy of Ecovative. These works ask visitors to rethink how we experience architecture.
The Chapuisat Brothers received an artistic education abroad for a number of years before ending up in Geneva, Switzerland in 2001, where their contrasting experiences led them to develop an interest in spatial studies. Their constructions transform space, turning interior and exterior boundaries inside out and toying with the perception of a subjective reality. They demand visitors’ active participation, putting them into the position of being an explorer. These environments break down visual and intellectual habits, testing the explorers and obliging them to trust in their senses. Often compared to cocoons or burrows, these installations harbour striking powers. They provoke ambiguous emotional reactions in visitors, like dreams which mingle curiosity, surprise and discomfort. Troy Briggs is an interdisciplinary artist. He employs technology and sound and everyday objects to create subtle interventions in public and private space. Often slow and almost always very quiet, he creates works that connect listeners and viewers to sounds and images that speak to the delicacy of human connection though the simplest of means. Briggs has exhibited in Chicago, Portland, Oregon and Berlin. He teaches at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and sculpture, sound and new media at Carthage College. Troybriggsart.com
CV Peterson is an interdisciplinary performance artist residing in Chicago, USA. They received a BA (2010) from Gustavus Adolphus College in Japanese studies and studio art, a BFA (2014) from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). CV studied sumi-e painting at Kansai Gaidai University in Hirakata-shi, Japan; followed by an apprenticeship at Moeller Bronze, Ltd.
