This event begins at 6:00 pm with cocktails under Joey Asal's olfactory Make Me a Rainbow during twilight. Performance begins at 7:00 pm.
This mixed reality performance featuring Abraham Avnisan, Judd Morrissey, and Jennifer Scappettone taps the sprawling veins of modern architecture and telecommunications infrastructures. Integrating immersive 3-d scans of the house with poetic reformulations of history, the performance creates an immersive yet otherworldly experience of the space, exposing the materials and human labor that make the networked domesticity of urban life possible.
Abraham Avnisan is an artist, technologist, and educator whose work is situated at the intersection of image, text, and code. He holds M.F.A. in Art and Technology Studies from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an M.F.A in Poetry from Brooklyn College. Judd Morrissey is a writer and code artist who creates poetic systems across a range of platforms incorporating electronic writing, internet art, live performance, and augmented reality. He is the creator of digital literary works including The Precession: An 80 Foot Long Internet Art Performance Poem, The Last Performance [dot org], and The Jew's Daughter. He is a recipient of a Creative Capital / Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant, a Fulbright Scholar’s Award in Digital Culture, and a Mellon Foundation Collaborative Fellowship for Arts Practice and Scholarship. Jennifer Scappettone works at the crossroads of writing, translation, and scholarly research, on the page and off. She is the author of the cross-genre verse books From Dame Quickly and The Republic of Exit 43: Outtakes & Scores from an Archaeology and Pop-Up Opera of the Corporate Dump, and of the critical study Killing the Moonlight: Modernism in Venice. She has collaborated on site-specific performance works with a wide spectrum of other artists at locations ranging from the tract of Trajan’s aqueduct beneath the American Academy in Rome to Fresh Kills Landfill. Installations of her visual poetry were exhibited most recently at Una Vetrina in Rome and WUHO in Los Angeles. Make Me a Rainbow
Make Me a Rainbow is part of the 2017 Terrain Biennale, a multi-site exhibition occurring in outdoor locations worldwide. Outdoors on the roof of 6018North, Chicago artist Joey Asal, using water and perfume, creates an olfactory rainbow that occurs during twilight, the golden hour. The scents in the atomizer mist sprinkler system reflect the diverse backgrounds of the neighborhood residents. Inside on 6018North's top floor Rodrigo Lara Zendejas' installation based on “Los Voladores de Papantla,” an ancient Mesoamerican ritual during which participants dance on top of a 98 foot pole. Zendejas’ work will spin, creating a rainbow of colors as a parallel to Asal’s outdoor work.
Joey Asal is a graduate student of design at the School of the Art institute of Chicago. Rodrigo Lara Zendejas was born in Mexico 1981. After he graduated from University, he has been teaching courses and workshops in Mexico and the U.S.A. Rodrigo Lara received his BFA from Universidad de Guanajuato, Mexico, and his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
