Bauhaus Museum Dessau (2015–2019)
addenda architects display an ensemble of artifacts that collectively describe their 2015 competition winning scheme for the Bauhaus Museum in Dessau, Germany. Their design identified several features of Walter Gropius’s 1926 design for the Bauhaus school, which still stands in the same city, and used these features as references for their museum: the glazed curtain wall, the two-story bridge, and the overall impression of transparency, lightness, and planarity of surfaces. These references are transformed in order to accommodate the museum’s programmatic requirements for displaying and archiving the Bauhaus Foundation’s collection. The building, currently under construction, is represented through a collection of objects in collaboration with German artist Moritz Küng. The first, self-published cahier starts a series that will document the construction process of the building. The cahier is presented on a customized metal plinth: an appropriated version of a chair designed by Alfred Arndt: a graduate, and later master, at the Bauhaus school. Hanging above is a detail study of the facade by German photographer Joachim Brohm and, also, one of addenda’s renderings of the museum exterior.

addenda (ES) is a young collaborative practice based in Barcelona and is led by Roberto González, Anne K. Hinz, Cecilia Rodríguez, Arnau Sastre and Jose Zabala. The diverse professional background of its team members is reflected by the variety and straightforwardness in the design field, having especially in mind the specific conditions of the physical and cultural context where they work. Their individuals have been awarded in competitions and recognized in several professional and cultural fields. Addenda is leading the design and construction of the Bauhaus Museum Dessau in Germany, expected to be opened in 2019.
Joachim Brohm (DE) studied photography at the University of Essen/Folkwang and at Ohio State University, Columbus, US, under Allan Sekula. “Since 1980, Brohm’s work has been centered around the structures of urban development in general and has focused on the residential, industrial and/or recreational suburban periphery in particular. - In so doing, time seems to almost come to a standstill, the situations he depicts being imbued with a certain timelessness.” (Moritz Küng).
Joachim Brohm (born 1955) has taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, USA, and at the School of Art and Design in Zurich, Switzerland. Since 1993 he is Professor of Photography at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig (HGB) / Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig (DE). His work is part of the collections of SFMOMA, MOCP Chicago, Museum Ludwig Cologne and Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, among others.
Moritz Küng (CH) is a Barcelona based curator, critic and book editor working at the interface between architecture, visual arts and publishing. Trained as a construction designer at Robert & Trix Haussmann in Zurich and Richter–Gerngross in Vienna, he studied then architecture at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and art history at the University of Brussels. He oversaw several Biennial exhibitions in Sao Paulo (2002), Venice (2008), Brno (2014) and Kortrijk (2016) and was a member of the jury for the Golden Lions at the 2010 Architecture Biennial in Venice. He has realized comprehensive solo exhibitions including monographs with architects as Arno Brandlhuber (2005), Christian Kerez (2009), OFFICE kgdvs (2005, ‘08) or SANAA (2007) and artists as Peter Downsbrough (2011), Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster (2004, ‘14) or Heimo Zobernig (2009, ‘16).
