BIENNIAL PROJECT

Two Towers

The PRODUCTORA tower is based on two earlier studio explorations. The first is the design for the open international competition put on by the Bauhaus Museum in Weimar; it is a collaboration with Derek Dellekamp Architects from 2011. In this project two similar volumes with different materiality are stacked one on top of the other in order to reduce the perceived height of the building. This compositional strategy was repeated in PRODUCTORA’s competition entry for a private developer in the city of Queretaro. In both cases, the stacked volumes create a totemic urban composition with large terraces of half the volume. The simple bic drawings by Carlos Bedoya became an important reference to represent this design strategy at the Chicago Architecture Biennial. By rendering the large MDF model in blue and red bic, we play with the ambiguity of the commission. Are these columns conceived as scale models of a possible tower proposal? Are they a sculptural prism in dialogue with fifteen other participants at the Yates Hall? Are they a miniature version of a tower or an enlarged sketch?
